Fire Safety Plan for 111 Peter Street

Occupant Fire Procedures

In the event of a fire:

  • Leave the fire area
  • Close all doors behind you
  • Activate the fire alarm by using the pull station
  • Telephone the Toronto Fire Dept., Dial 911. Never assume that this has been done.
  • Give the correct address, location of the fire and your name
  • Use exit stairwells to leave the building immediately.

Do not return until it is declares safe to do so by the fire official.

DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS

If you are in a suite and a fire alarm is heard:

  • Before opening the door, feel the door and door knob for heat, If they are not hot, brace yourself against the door and open it carefully. If you see smoke, feel air pressure or a hot draft, close the door quickly and proceed to an alternate exit.
  • If you find no fire in the corridor, close the door behind you and Leave by nearest exit stairwell.
  • If you encounter smoke in the corridor or stairwell, consider taking the corridor to the other side of the building where another stairwell may be clear, or return to your suite.
  • Do not use elevators.
If you cannot leave your suite or have returned to it because of fire or heavy smoke, remain in your suite and:
  • Close the door, but leave it unlocked for possible entry of firefighters.
  • Dial 911 and tell the toronto fire department where you are, then signal to firefighters by waving a towel/shirt.
  • Seal all cracks where smoke can get by using a roll of wide masking/duct tape.
  • Crouch low to the floor if smoke enters the room.
  • Move to the most protected room and partially open the window for air. Close the window if smoke comes in
  • Wait to be rescued. - remain calm - Do not panic or jump
  • Listen for instructions or information given by authorized personnel.
